Treasurer’s Report October 2017 – September 2018

This year the Club made a loss of over $930.

The main details are as follows:
Income:
Match fees were up a little on last year’s at $9,528 (last year $9,209).
We had 7 teams in Section 1 and 6 Teams in Section 2.
In Season 2 the fees needed to be raised to $100 person in order to reduce the size of the end of year loss to the Club.
Receipts from sale of second hand shuttles was down a little at $110 (last year $255)
Receipts from Fill-ins was slightly up at $565 (last year $461)

Expenditures:
Shuttles $2,788 (last year $999)
Court Hire $6,362.50 (last year $6183)
Admin $554 (last year $654)
Refreshments $570 (last year $680)
Cards and Gifts $155 (last year $462)
Trophies $566 (last year $495)
Registration & Insurance Badminton Victoria $810 each year

Funds in Bank:
Funds in the bank at the start of the year was $6,530
At the end of year the balance was $5,600.

Fundraising:
The fundraising event was once again very successful with $1,169 raised and donated to the Anti Cancer Council of Victoria.

As you can see from the above details the main reason for our large loss this year is that we spent more on shuttles. We bought a lot more and quality shuttles than we did last year. In future we will endeavour to keep our shuttle expenditure at a more regular amount by monitoring usage and keeping a consistent amount in stock. Spending on items such as admin, cards, refreshments, and trophies were, in aggregate, similar to last year’s payments. Court Hire costs increased as we would expect every year.

Looking forward to next year we can expect the cost of our two major items, namely Court Hire and Shuttles, to go up with the cost of living. In addition it is likely that we will have a reduced number of players next season which means that we will probably need to raise the fees to cover the costs of operating the Club.

Tramboat Again!

Following several past successful Melbourne Tramboat outings by TLBA, we decided this year to reprise the excursion to Williamstown. 36 people consisting of current players, a couple of past players (lovely to see Janis Wells and Lyn Hillas again) and a few family and friends boarded the tramboat and were welcomed enthusiastically by captain Anthony and first mate Lisa. Undeterred by the rather overcast conditions, we happily set off with much chatter. Anthony gave us some interesting commentary and informative descriptions of landmarks along the way while we enjoyed our morning cuppa.

We had an hour to wander around scenic Williamstown. Some people enjoyed a walk to the the botanical gardens taking in the charming Victorian architecture or had another coffee fix at one of the many local cafés on the waterfront while others indulged in a little pre-Christmas retail therapy. By now, the clouds had cleared which drew a group to enjoy a pre-lunch vino in the sunshine.

The allure of our fish and chips lunch drew us back on board. And very delicious it was! On the way back to Docklands, a small dance area was cleared, the volume of the music went up a notch or three, and quite a few ladies enthusiastically took to the floor, led by our dance-meister Jenny Lee. There may or may not even have been some pole-dancing attempted….but a few of the girls sensibly took themselves onto the top deck at that stage, and Naree and Michelle saw a beautiful seal frolicking in the shimmering water.

It was a terrific day and a lovely way to celebrate the coming Christmas season and the conclusion of another happy season at Thornburn Ladies. Jenny took the opportunity to thank the committee and especially the match secretaries for their work this year, but also thank you to you Jenny (and to your able assistant Michael) for organising this successful and popular event this year.

Treasurer’s Report 2016-2017

Treasurer’s Report – Thornburn Ladies Badminton Association Inc.
For year October 2016 – October 2017

This year the Club’s efforts resulted in a virtual break even situation (- $15). Last year receipts were higher than payments by $2,237. The year before receipts were less than payments by $2120.

Factors that contributed to this result were:

  1. Match Fees per person remained the same as last years, ie, $85 per season.
  2. Match Fee Receipts were down as we had 6 teams in Section 2 in Season 2.
  3. Badminton Victoria Registration & Insurance fees were reduced to $20 per person this year which covered the costs of our annual fee to Badminton Victoria.
  4. Court Hire appears higher mainly due to last year’s being lower than normal.
  5. The cost of Shuttles this year was low compared to the last two years mainly because we did not buy as many shuttles and tried various quality shuttles.
  6. Receipts from Shuttle sales were slightly down on last years.
  7. Receipts from fill-ins was much the same as last years.
  8. Our other minor payments for refreshments, prizes, admin etc. were in total much the same as previous years.
  9. Receipts for the Tramboat outing did not cover the cost of the event.

Funds in Bank: Funds in the bank at the start of the year were $6,545. At the end of this year the Funds at the Bank were $6,530.

Fund Raising: A very successful Fund Raising was held earlier in the year where we raised $1,037.10 for the Cancer Council of Victoria.

In Summary

Taking the above into account I would expect shuttle sales to be higher next year as we purchase more shuttles and Hire of Courts to be slightly lower.

Our Revenue will depend on how many teams we have playing. However at this stage I do not see a need to increase match fees from $85 per season and we should be able to leave BV at $20 per year.

The complete details of all costs and payments made throughout the year are available from the Secretary should you like a copy.
